USES AND ORGANIZATION

Ground Floor: collective and management uses of the center itself (assembly room, library and administration)
Floor 1-2: research uses (laboratories, platforms and service areas); the
Semi-basement floor: general store of the hospital and
Cover plant. They house the complex facilities that this type of center requires.

Maximum flexibility: formal multifunctionality and iso-spaces of the main elements (laboratories and research platforms) and the creation of a service axis -servant spaces- as the backbone, which feed the rest of the building.

The extreme floors (ground floor: library + auditorium,... and roof: facilities) encompass the parts of the program with the greatest functional disparity.

The image is inherent to its intrinsic functionality. It manifests itself through an envelope that covers its formal determinations. The outer skin “traces” its internal structures.

BIO-MIMESIS AND BIO-TYPES

…the camel, the polar bear and the leaf: the project aims to link with the content of the program: bio-medical research, through the application of biomimicry (adaptation of biological systems to human procedures and artifacts) in the process architectural generation.

These three biotypes are taken as a reference to achieve similar adaptive systems.

The camel as a paradigm of functional section

The defense against extreme weather conditions causes the appearance of bumps as storage reserves (water, food, fat, etc...);

In the same way that the anatomy of the camel expands where its function requires it, (and that in another type of animal, it would be deformation-mal-formation-functional,...) in this building lumps and cavities are generated where the function itself also requires it: backpacks of various sizes appearing on the roof (to accommodate the multiplicity of installation machines that a technological building like this one needs) and cavities on the ground floor and basement (access to the warehouse, loading and unloading trucks, access to the interior patio, light entrances to the basement, etc…)… thus, the building is deformed to configure a silhouette capable of functioning effectively, even capable of mutating in the future in its deformations, without losing its essence.

The bear as an example of multifunctional skin

The skin must keep the internal temperature of the bear stable, despite the permanent cold outside, and it achieves this through a thick black skin, lined with transparent hollow hairs that keep the hot air inside: the vision we have is of white hair, but it is due to accumulation, and thus it also blends in with ice and snow.

The leaf as an integration between structural resolution and flexibility

For the design of the perforated aluminum plates, the third biotype is used: like the leaves of the trees, these plates of enormous dimensions (4500 x 800 mm) and little thickness (3 mm) must be self-supporting, light, flexible and stand upright…for this, the mixture of origami allows the generation of planes, folds and nerves, stiffening the whole and adopting the necessary geometry to protect from the sun and allow vision.
